Complete Well-Being: Nurturing Your Emotional Health

We all need a gentle nudge every now and then to remember that life is more than just a series of tasks on autopilot.

In our fast-paced world, it's easy to find ourselves overwhelmed and under-engaged. Life gets complex, juggling work, family, friends, and household duties can become burdensome. But here's the thing – feeling overwhelmed doesn't mean you've failed. It's a result of the excessive "should's" and "must's" piled on our shoulders, making every aspect of life feel exhausting.

This stress doesn't just affect our minds; it manifests in our bodies and hearts too. As a family chiropractor, I've learned that true health involves treating the whole self, understanding how stress can turn into physical and emotional pain.

Life isn't meant to be a struggle. Yes, it has its challenges, but it's also meant to be embraced, enjoyed, and to nourish our souls. What if we started committing to things that genuinely light us up, and let go of the things that don't?

Let's explore some areas where changing our approach can positively impact our emotional and overall health.

Work Can Be Enjoyable

Work doesn't have to be a daily grind. Try integrating mindfulness habits, like actively appreciating small joys during your work hours. It could be a smile from a colleague, completing a project, or even enjoying your favorite podcast while working.

Even if you're not in your dream job, it doesn't mean every workday has to be a drag. Only 20% of the US workforce is genuinely passionate about their job. Consider viewing your job as a means to an end and explore other options if needed.

A Functional Family and Homelife

Family life demands energy, and that's okay. Embrace the growth and changes that naturally occur in families. For partners, actively find reasons to remain in love and recommit to fostering intimacy. For parents, initiate family overhauls – discuss what's working, what's not, and what everyone needs for a happier life.

Intentional family time has surprising health benefits, like lower obesity rates and reduced stress levels. Communicate and be with your loved ones; it lowers blood pressure and cortisol levels.

Friends Bring More Than Fun

In-person connection with friends is vital for mental health. Social media can't replace the sense of belonging, purpose, and happiness that friends bring. Prioritize spending time together, whether through visits or phone calls.

Your House Doesn't Need to Be Perfect

Household chores can be overwhelming, but they don't have to be. Consider outsourcing tasks that are consistently avoided and make remaining chores enjoyable. Share responsibilities equitably within your household, ensuring everyone's needs are considered.

Feel All the Feels

You have permission to feel your feelings, even the stressful ones. Our bodies communicate when something isn't right, and emotions are part of that communication. Don't try to control or suppress your feelings; it's okay to acknowledge them.

Let's strive for whole-body health by normalizing the expression and sharing of our feelings. This allows us to fully engage and be present in our lives. I want each of us to live a vibrant life full of wonder. You have my permission to feel and live your best life – now go out there and do it!
